Hobkirk's have been in the sewing machine business for over 100 years, with retail outlets within the UK at Blackburn and Bury, and as a result can boast first class knowledge and service in the sewing machine industry.

Founded in 1903 by Mr William Hobkirk, Wm Hobkirk & Son began trading from Salford, Blackburn (Not Manchester). William was joined by his son Edgar Hobkirk then in the 60's by Edgar's son and William's grandson Peter Hobkirk.

The company then expanded having another retail shop on Darwen Street on the opposite side of Blackburn's town centre which to this day is the company's head office.

During the 70's and 80's it was Peter Hobkirk who expanded the chain of domestic shops into Blackpool, Accrington, Preston, Burnley, Bury and Rochdale.

The 1980s also saw the introduction of industrial sewing machines to the companies already vast range of sewing products, along with the appointment of Mr Brian Buttress as Industrial Technical Director.

2001 saw the opening of 'Hobby's Art and Craft Store' which has gone from strength to strength and more recently has doubled in size to expand the range of products on offer.

Mark Hobkirk joined the company in 1993 and in June of 2005 became Sales Director, with Peter Hobkirk as Company Chairman.

The company continues to trade from their head office on Darwen Street, Blackburn with a satellite branch still operating from Bury.

Our normal opening hours are:

Open at 08:00 every day.

 

For Large washers

Monday to Friday, Last wash 19:00, Shop empty by 20:00

Saturday and Sunday Last wash 17:00, shop empty by 18:00

Please don't leave washing unattended after "last wash" time.

  The shop may be closed at "last wash" time if there is nobody in the shop,

 

For users of Jumbo and Mammoth washers

The cycle time for these washers is longer, so last wash times 

are set 15 minutes earlier.

 

 

For Drying Only customers

Last start time is 30 minutes earlier than for washing.

Maximum Working Temperature

There is no legal maximum or minimum temperature as regulations call for a ‘reasonable’ temperature only in the Approved Code of Practice, with a guideline of 13 degrees minimum for sedentary work. The TUC is calling for a maximum working temperature of 30 degrees

Injury and Sickness at Work

Injuries and sickness at work cost the British Economy £14 billion annually. The HSE Annual Report showed highest rate of injury occurs within the first three months of employment. An average £5k fine is imposed following prosecutions. A TUC report says the most significant problems affecting employees are stress, back pain, infections and repetitive strain injuries

Employees Telephone Numbers

An employer does not have the right to demand an employee’s telephone number unless it is specified in the contract that the employee has to be available outside normal working hours   An employer could be sued for invasion of privacy under the Human Rights Act if they phone their staff at home with unnecessary or inappropriate calls

Parental Leave

The Government is expected to extend the current leave scheme to include unpaid time off to be with children up to age 7 (currently age 5). Another change may be the 13 weeks leave, currently available over the period until the child reaches 5 (in blocks of no more than 4 weeks per year) could be taken in any one year. 65% of mothers’ work and 54.4% have children under 5

Highly Skilled Migrant Programme (HSMP)

HSMP has been extended indefinitely. This system allows migrants from outside the European Union with necessary skills and experience to enter the UK to find work. The system works on a points basis: points being awarded for educational achievements, work experience and past earnings.

Information and Consultation Directive

The directive will require that staff are informed and consulted on issues including employment prospects, work organisation changes or redundancies, transfers etc.; it will take effect in 2005 for firms with 150 employees or more, in 2007 for companies with over 100 employees and in 2008 for companies with 50 or more
